Student phase
Rubikon Theatre
started as a student theatre and was formed due to a need to think about
theatre and explore it in a different way.
The first project of the ensemble was the performance Rubikon
(Rubicon) – poetical, picturesque story about a human life. First
performance was on 19th
of March 1995. Same year, on 18th of December the premiere of
the second show was held. It was- Nova ; complex of synthesized
images based on Verdi’s opera Nabucco.
As there were no schools of performing arts in Croatia (only workshops),
some of the members of the Theater were studying performing arts abroad.
After gaining experience in European theater centers (Prague, Zlatna
Koruna, Moscow, Copenhagen, Zagreb) and participations in various
projects with other theatrical groups (Griftheatar – Netherlands, Labin
Art Express – Croatia, MAPA Moving Academy for Performing Arts project,
Student theater group ALBA from Zagreb), at the end of 1996, Rubicon
Theater was founded in order to explore
theatre of movement, theatre of object and experimental theatre.
Most of the members
of The Rubikon Theatre
were students at a time and the theatre was therefore qualified as a
student, ‘youth’ theater, contemporary orientated, preoccupied with
human conditions and situations which modern man (and society) create.
On the 1st of January 1997,
Rubikon Theatre
was officially founded and
registered. With its unique and independent comprehension of theatre,
three new productions were created: Nula (Zero), InterNetWork
and
D E-Motion(s)through which all contributed to establishing
Rubikon Theater
as a
vital and unique part of Rijeka`s contemporary cultural scene.
With the following productions Aspect of Alice and Katarina na
travi
(Katarina On the Grass), exploration of space and time has
continued and the barriers between the spectators and actors have been
redefined as open entities. In a few years of it`s existence
The Rubikon Theatre
has participated in about twenty festivals-Croatian as well as
international, and won various prizes.
